The Importance of Seatbelts What happens if you forget to buckle your seatbelt just one time in the course of your day? The odds of something happening, that may or may not be detrimental to your health, is purely coincidental, or is it? Perhaps statistics, and a personal event in my life, can explain the importance of the seatbelt. Statistics show that more than forty thousand deaths, in the United States, are caused from car accidents each year. More than half of them could have been prevented had those individuals worn their seatbelts. Even knowing this information, many people choose not to wear seatbelts anyway. It is extremely important for people to understand the significance of wearing a seatbelt. Perhaps understanding what it†¦show more content†¦It was about 8:00 a.m. when he noticed a utility truck coming right at him. My dad had his seatbelt on, so when the truck hit his diesel tanks, flipping him up in the air one and a half times to land on the passenger side of the truck, the diesel fuel was spraying all over him. Dad couldn’t see because of the diesel fuel in his eyes, so he got out of the seatbelt and began feeling his way out of the truck. He finally found his way out by pushing what was left of the drivers’ side door out so he could crawl out. Quickly he walked away from the truck to discover that the driver of the truck that hit him was a young man lying on the ground, in front of his truck, gasping for air. My father attended that young man’s funeral and told the family how sorry he was for the accident. They were really great people and understood that it was just a accident, but my dad was so torn up by the whole tragedy that he quit driving truck for a couple of years. For the longest time he couldn’t even look at a truck or travel that stretch of highway. To this day, dad still gets really upset if a car or truck starts to come towards him or veers over the line toward him. Needless to say this dev astated our whole family, we lost our house, was homeless for about a year, lived in the National Forest, and then in a van. Later we got a travel trailer and lived in that, it was hard on all of us, living with four people in a trailer and all the other situations.
